Cash bid to create upgrade for park

27th February 2013 Ilkeston Advertisor, Nottingham County Council, Stapleford Community Group Tags: , , , , , 0 Comments

Big improvements are in the pipeline for a popular park in Stapleford if a community group is successful in tens of thousands of pounds worth of grants.

Stapleford Community Group is applying for £38,000 to boost the Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground. Plans include fencing on its northern side and the creation of a new path.

The not-for-profit organisation is working with Groundwork UK to apply for the funding from Nottinghamshire County Council.

Group organiser Richard MacRae said: “If there was a path there people could walk their dogs and not muddy the grass.

“Fencing off the northern part will make it safer for people with the road there.”

Richard says that if the bid was successful it would be just the beginning of his plans for the park.

“If it goes ahead this will encourage me to go for it and get more grants,” he said.

“I would like to see more outdoor exercise equipment on there. People go on about everybody being fat so it would be great if people could have five minutes on the machines – it’s a bit of fun.”

Groundwork UK spokesman Chris Burton confirmed that the community charity was helping Stapleford Community Group with its bid to the county council for the cash.

The organisation helps communities to develop services and facilities for residents.

A Nottinghamshire County Council spokesman said that the bid for funding had been agreed in principal and was now due to come before a committee.

However a final decision will not be made until the new financial year.

In the meantime, a £300 grant from Greenwood Community Forest will be used to pay for three trees to create a shaded area around a new bench at the park. Children from Wadsworth Fields Primary School will plant them at a special ceremony at the park on March 4 at 11am.

Thanks to the Ilkeston Advertisor for running this issue.
