Clifton fun run to take place on new A453
FAMILIES are being invited to join a “once-in-a-lifetime” fun run down a new section of the A453 in Clifton.
Laing O’Rourke, which is project managing the road’s £160 million widening scheme, has organised the event to say thank you to local residents for their patience amidst the disruption of the roadworks.
The scheme to widen the road between the A52 and junction 24 of the M1 has been in progress since the beginning of last year and is due for completion in May next year.
But one section of the road from the new Mill Hill roundabout in Clifton will be opened to traffic in a few weeks’ time.
For the only time ever, runners will have the freedom of the road at the event on Saturday, September 27.
Claire Brough, project liaison manager at Laing O’Rourke, said: “We wanted to do something to say thank you to people who live in the Clifton area for their patience during all the works.
“We’ve had to shut footpaths, we’ve shut roads, and there has been all sorts of noise from the machinery.
“Although we’ve got measures in place to try to reduce the impact, we’re wholeheartedly aware of the impact of what we’re doing and wanted to do something where people can come and have a fun day.
“This really is a once-in-a-lifetime event.”
There will be two runs during the day, at 11am and 2pm, and the route will involve a one-mile stretch of the road from the Mill Hill roundabout.
It will cost £2 to take part, but all money will be donated to the Nottingham Hospitals Charity.
There will also be a variety of food and craft stalls at the event, as well as live music and performances.
Mark Cordner, chairman of Clifton Community Events, has also been involved in the organisation.
He is appealing for people who want to perform at the event to get in touch. The 38-year-old, of Failsworth Close, said: “This really is a one-off thing – it’s never going to happen again and it will be an amazing opportunity for people to be able to run down the new stretch of the A453.
“We’d love to see plenty of people getting involved in the fun run, but we’re also trying to encourage anybody who wants to get up on stage to let us know. Whether it’s just getting up and singing one song or a dance, anyone is welcome,’’ he said.
“It’ll be a great day out for all the family.”
The event will run from 10am until 4pm and runners can register on the day.
