WhiteHillsPark Federation Inset Days and Staff Development

6th May 2016 Help & Advice, Local Schools, Upcoming Events Tags: 0 Comments

During the year, in common with all schools, we have five In-Service training, or Inset Days allocated for staff training and development.

On occasions, parents have asked what they are used for and why they happen in the way they do.

They are a fantastic resource which gives us the opportunity to work together and can be used to prepare for changes in curriculum or assessment, or to develop teaching and learning.

So far this year, we have had four Inset days. We have covered a range of subjects including Safeguarding, Performance Management, Special Needs, Middle Leader training and Marking and Feedback.

We also used one of our days to give staff the opportunity to visit another school, which was very useful in broadening our perspective and picking up ideas from elsewhere.

Our final day of this year, which will take place on Monday, 4th July, will be focussed on assessment, so that we can be ready for new requirements in the next school year.

The work done on Inset days is only part of the professional development that takes place.

As well as individual professional development, such as attendance on courses and coaching.

We have half-termly teaching and learning meetings for all the teaching staff, and a programme of department and faculty meetings. Our teachers are all part of a development group which has a particular focus, such as Improving Numeracy or supporting disadvantaged students.

As well as our own professional development, these groups also produce advice and create resources that can be used across the schools.

We also work with partner schools, including the Minster School Alliance, to share and disseminate good practice.

We have established a pattern in the Federation in which we begin the school year with two Inset Days, and we then have one each term.

We try and vary the days where possible so that the same lessons are not hit on the timetable, but to make things more convenient for families, the Autumn and Spring days are added to an existing school holiday, and the Summer term day is either a Friday or a Monday.

Next year’s Inset days will be:

Monday, 5th September 2016

Tuesday, 6th September 2016

Friday, 21st October 2016

Wednesday, 4th January 2017

Friday, 30th June 2017
