The Games of Remembrance, through the power of football, brings World War 1 stories of courage and sacrifice alive, 100 years after the guns fell silent.

26th September 2018 Local Clubs, Nottingham County Council, Upcoming Events Tags: , , 0 Comments

The First World War generation had a passion for football, a game which massively grew in popularity in the early part of the 20th century. Every local club from cities, towns & villages was dramatically affected by the War. UK football teams were a focus for army recruitment and tens of thousands of professional and amateur footballers proudly signed up to serve. Football became (and still is) the soldiers game, as men on the frontlines played together with friends and foe, and women and girls on the home front took to the football pitch in unprecedented numbers.

The Games of Remembrance is a project for anyone interested in football to find out about and remember football’s important role in World War 1, including an education and tribute programme, an exciting British Army vs German Armed Forces football match and a legacy for armed forces charities.

The pinnacle of the Games of Remembrance in 2018 are two football matches and spectaculars between the male and female British Army and the German Armed Forces.

More than two matches, these inspirational occasions will include fan-zones, entertainment, exhibitions, music and will be enjoyed by fans, families, VIPs and by the football community, including sporting legends.

Games will be played at Nott’s County FC and Nottingham Forest FC on 8 November 2018. Tickets and hospitality are on sale now.
