Christmas has come early for residents in Stapleford thanks to £160,000 funding for a refurbished play area and multi-use games area at Hickings Lane Recreation Ground.

Children and young people in the town are set to get the new, state of the art facilities thanks to £93,000 from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, along with a further £67,000 from Broxtowe Borough Council’s Pride in Parks scheme.

Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee, Councillor Shane Easom said: “This is the most ambitious project in our Pride in Parks scheme so far and everyone at the Council is very excited about starting work in the new year, once ground conditions are suitable. I hope local residents in Stapleford will be looking forward to seeing the finished facilities once they are completed.”

The application for funding was made working closely with Stapleford Town Football Club who are one of the main users of the park and The Stapleford Community Group. The two organisations helped with the community consultation which helped identify the need for a replacement Multi Use Games Area. The Football Club have also pledged £1,000 as a contribution towards the project.

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s local grant manager says: “We are delighted to be supporting the Hickings Lane Recreation Ground project and pleased that our funding will provide such a fantastic facility for young people in Stapleford. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”

The play area has been designed to incorporate play equipment and features that were requested through extensive consultation with local people in summer 2018. The final plan is yet to be revealed, but will be displayed in the park early in 2019!

The improvements are the latest in a series of play area upgrades which have been completed as part of the Council’s “Pride in Parks” initiative to invest £500,000 in parks and open spaces over the next two years.
